What is RCT’s Performance Group?

The RCT Performance Group is an elite group of young performers, aged 13 - 21, who desire to further hone their craft through preparation for both solo and ensemble performances. The group is formed on an audition basis and is limited in size in order to maximize each performer’s opportunities within the group.

Who should audition for RCT’s Performance Group?

Any performer age 13 - 21 who:
- Would like more opportunities to perform individually and as part of an ensemble
- Would like to hone their skills in vocal performance, acting, and dance through one-on-one instruction with our professional staff
- Would like to augment their artistic resume through membership in an elite group

2023-2024 Session Theme and Performances

Our theme this session is Today’s Hits, Yesterday’s Favorites! We are defining this as songs from 1980’s to present. Songs can be from popular culture or musical theatre genre. We will also have a special set of Miscast musical numbers in our show. This session’s culmination will be a performance at RCT’s annual “A Night at the Theatre” event on January 27th, 2024. As we build up to this capstone event, there may also be additional performance opportunities for the group through the fall.

Rehearsals and Time Commitment

Rehearsals will generally be held one evening per week depending upon performer availability. Not all group members will be needed at every rehearsal. Additional rehearsals will be held the weeks prior to scheduled performances. Additional performance opportunities often arise within the community and we will assess the group’s availability and schedule as they are presented.

Audition Procedures

1) Register to audition using the link above. You will have an opportunity to take care of payment/request a scholarship.

2) Bring your completed Conflict Schedule to auditions.

3) Prepare an audition song from a show within our Today’s Hits, Yesterday’s Favorites theme (songs from 1980’s-present).

- Select a 16-32 bar cut (approximately 1 minute)
- Locate and bring piano music, marked with your cut, three-hole-punched and in a binder.
- Your audition song MAY or MAY NOT be considered for inclusion in our performances. Solo assignments will be determined after the group is assembled.

Other Information

  • Any conflicts related to other RCT activities, like Nemo, Beauty and the Beast, or Classes will be approved. Our intent is to arrange the schedule such that you can participate in more than one RCT activity.

For those enrolled in another RCT activity, these conflicts will be approved and you may participate in both RCT activities. Any conflicts added after casting may affect your ability to remain in the show.

  • Please bring a recorded accompaniment for your vocal audition. This should be a 30 - 45 second section of a song from a Broadway musical other than The Addams Family. An accompanist will not be available.

  • Once everyone has sung, we will have dance auditions as a group.

Callbacks
The callback list will be sent out via email by 12pm on Tuesday, 12/13. Callbacks will be held on Tuesday, 12/13, at 6pm.

We will not be calling back for all roles, so if you are not called, this does not necessarily mean you are not cast. The final cast list will be sent out via email by Friday, 12/16.

Rehearsals
Rehearsals will begin after the cast list is released and will typically be held Sunday-Thursday afternoon/evenings and some Saturdays. Not all cast members will be called to every rehearsal. Rehearsals will be longer and later during Tech and Dress rehearsals. Please refer to the Conflict Schedule (link above) as all white spaces listed are potential rehearsal times for the production.

Performances
Our performances will be held in front of a live audience.

Costumes
Most costumes will be provided. The costumer may ask cast members to provide standard items that they may already have, like a white dress shirt.
Cast members will be expected to provide appropriate shoes, socks, and undergarments.

Volunteer Hours
We cannot offer our Mainstage Youth Workshops without the help of cast family members. We ask that each family volunteer for a minimum of 15 hours, including one Annex shift. More info will be emailed regarding volunteering for set creation, snack bar sales, ticket sales, and annex help. If you are unable to volunteer outside of our one annex shift, you may bring items to fulfill your hour minimum.

Directors: Cassie March, David Williams

Auditions: 8/16 6pm
Fall Session: 8/16 - 12/19
Fall Session Fee: $195

Fall 2021 Session Theme and Performances

Our theme this session is Modern Broadway. We are defining this as any new Broadway shows that opened 2015 - present. That means shows like Mean Girls, Beetlejuice, Dear Evan Hanson, Waitress, and more! Solos will be selected from within this theme. Performance Group will also have the privilege of taking part in our 2022 season release party / fundraiser event. The group will perform one ensemble number from each of our 2022 season shows. Hint: that means that Performance Group members will know our 2022 season selections before anyone else!

Rehearsals and Time Commitment

Rehearsals will generally be held two evenings per week depending upon performer availability. Not all group members will be needed at every rehearsal. Additional tech rehearsals will be held the weeks prior to our scheduled performances (10/30 and 12/19). Additional performance opportunities often arise within the community and we will assess the group’s availability and schedule as they are presented.

Audition Procedures

Auditions for this session of Performance Group will be a bit different! However, we think they will be a fun and valuable experience for you as well as a time saver for us.

1) Register to audition using the link above. You will have an opportunity to take care of payment/request a scholarship -and- you will receive access to the Audition Song List. The audition songs are all songs within our Modern Broadway theme (described above).

2) Bring your completed Conflict Schedule to auditions.

3) Vocal auditions will be conducted “callback style”.
- You do not need to prepare a specific audition song in advance
- You may sing for any song on the Audition Song List that you feel could be a good showcase of your abilities
- Anyone interested in a particular song will briefly learn a cut around the piano with David, and then each person will sing
- You need to sing at least one song over the course of the night. We encourage you to sing more than one song if possible; you may sing for as many songs as you like.
- If you would like to sing something, that is within our theme, that is not on the Audition Song List, email us at info@rocklintheatre.org and we will review.
- The songs you sing for this night MAY or MAY NOT be considered for inclusion in our performances. Solo assignments will be determined after the group is assembled.

4) After vocal auditions are complete, we will conduct a brief dance audition. Bring clothes and footwear appropriate for dancing.

Other Information

*If you are 7 at the time of auditions, but will turn 8 during the workshop dates, you may audition. Open to all skill levels including beginners who are new to theatre.

Workshop Fee: $295
Scholarships are available. You will have an opportunity to pay the fee, or request a scholarship, during the registration process. The fee must be paid, or a scholarship requested, in order to register for an audition slot. In the event you are not cast, or withdraw your application prior to the cast list being released, your fee will be refunded in full.

Audition Procedures
Due to COVID, our audition process will be a little different.

  • You must register in advance for an audition slot, at the link above. You may audition on either night. Please arrive at Finn Hall 20 minutes prior to your scheduled audition time. You will be required to wait outside until you are called in.

  • Please bring your completed Audition Form (download) and Conflict Schedule (download)

  • When completing your audition form, please be sure you have listed the parts you are auditioning for and the parts you will accept, including ensemble. Listing YES to a role or ensemble and then dropping the show because you are unhappy with the casting reflects poorly upon you, and will be considered in future auditions. If at any point during auditions or callbacks you would like to update your Audition Form, let us know. It is imperative that the casting team has this information before casting the show.

  • Be prepared to submit ALL conflicts for the workshop period and show dates. We will cast the show based on submitted conflicts. For those enrolled in RCT dance classes, this conflict will be approved and you may participate in both the classes and the production. Any conflicts added after casting may affect your ability to remain in the show.

  • Please bring a recorded accompaniment for your vocal audition. This should be a 30 - 45 second section of a song from a Broadway musical other than Moana. An accompanist will not be available.

  • Once everyone has sung, we will have dance auditions as a group.

Callbacks
The callback list will be sent out via email by 12pm on Tuesday, 8/10. Callbacks will be held on Tuesday, 8/10, at 6pm.

We will not be calling back for all roles, so if you are not called, this does not necessarily mean you are not cast. The final cast list will be sent out via email by Friday, 8/13.

We do not know what level of restrictions will be in place at the time of our planned performances in October, however it is our intention to perform in front of a live audience. In addition, a DVD recording will be made available.

COVID Safety Procedures

We will implement appropriate safety and sanitation measures, in accordance with local requirements.

It is important to note that while we are taking diligent steps to reduce the possibility of COVID-19 transmission, we cannot eliminate this risk.

COVID Safety Procedures

Our workshops will necessarily look a little different as we attempt to create the safest environment possible during the COVID era. The following procedures will be in place, in accordance with current state guidelines:

  • All staff, volunteers, and participants will be temperature and symptom-checked prior to entering the building each day. Anyone with COVID symptoms and/or a temperature greater than 100 degrees will not be allowed to participate.

  • All participants will be required to arrive wearing a face covering. Face coverings will be kept on throughout the day.

  • We will practice social distancing to the extent possible. Social distancing restrictions will be eased for a limited duration for certain activities throughout the day.

  • All staff, volunteers, and participants will be required to wash their hands upon entering the building. Hand sanitizer will be available as well.

  • Our facility will undergo a complete cleaning and sanitization each day, and high-touch surfaces will be disinfected multiple times throughout the day.

  • Some activities will be conducted outdoors to maximize fresh air access.

It is important to note that while we are taking diligent steps to reduce the possibility of COVID-19 transmission, we cannot eliminate this risk.
